As a side note I also found that if you try to create a folder that can contain
subfolders within a mail client such as Thunderbird or Outlook Express you’ll
run into problems.  You can follow the instructions below using webmail to
create the subfolder or, if you have ssh (shell access) you can log into your
server and follow the instructions in the second section.

SECTION # 1

Creating Folders with Sub-folders in Webmail.

To create a folder that can contain subfolders,

1. Click on the ‘Folders’ icon.
2. Select ‘Create’ from the pull-down menu.
3. In the dialog box enter [folder-name]/ Note, if you don’t include the ‘/’ after the folder name you won’t be able to create subfolder in that directory.
4. Click ‘OK’.

SECTION # 2

1. ssh to you shell account
2. cd to your mail directory
3. Create a directory called what you want the folder to be named such as
   “Test-Mail”
   mkdir Test-Mail
4. Now change directory to that new folder.
   cd Test-Mail/
5. Create a file such as archived-mail
   touch archived-mail
6. Test opening your IMAP client such as Thunderbird or Outlook Express and
   seeing if you can move a message to the Test-Folder/archived-mail

In Outlook Express it will clearly tell you that this is a corrupt spool file problem in the details area of the Task Box.  Just click the “Errors” tab, and you’ll see the error.  Outlook does the same thing.

There was a problem logging onto your mail server. Your Password was rejected. Account: ‘mail.hiwaayoffice.net’, Server: ‘mail.hiwaayoffice.net’, Protocol: POP3, Server Response: ‘-ERR [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes) in /home/.sites/143/site2/.users/129/badspool/mbox; change recognition mode or check for corrupted mail drop.’, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92

The instructions are dependent on them knowing the correct mailbox account name.  Aliases will not work.  Have your customer follow these instructions.  Shell access is not required.  Be sure they know what they will see on the screen when they do this or they will tell you “its not working”.

1.  First get them to a operating system command line such as cmd in Windows.
Start > Run > type in cmd and hit enter.

2.  Have them telnet to port 110 of their mail server for example:
telnet mail.hiwaayoffice.net 110  (then enter)

Once they do this the following line will be displayed, with nothing under it.

+OK ready  <28949.1234903604@raq1.hiwaay.net> [ISafe POP3 Proxy]

3.  Under the line above type in the pop3 command user and the username with the problem and then enter.

user badspool

4.  Next type the password for that account, and then enter.

pass jamfeti

5.  If the spool is corrupt, you’ll get something like the text below.

-ERR [SYS/PERM] Unable to process From lines (envelopes) in /home/.sites/143/sit
e2/.users/129/badspool/mbox; change recognition mode or check for corrupted mail
drop.

If the spool is working normally, you’ll get “+OK Logged in.”  which is correct.  Just type quit and then close the window.

6.  Type quit and close the command line window.
